What To Expect

Pre-Operative Consultation

You will meet with your anaesthesiologist in the ward, clinic or in the reception area. The anaesthetic plan will then be conveyed and discussed with you after a brief interview of your health status.

Monitoring

Routine physiological monitors, such as ECG, blood pressure and oxygen monitoring will be applied to you. Your anaesthesiologist will routinely insert an intravenous cannula.

Induction

An oxygen mask will be applied over your mouth and nose. An airway will be sited to help you to breathe during surgery.

In sedation scenarios, an oxygen cannula will be strapped under your nose, which may tickle your nose a little. Occasionally, smaller oral or nasal airways may be sited to help you to breathe as well.

Maintenance

Anaesthetic medication will be administered to you while you sleep for the duration of the procedure.

Waking You Up

As the medication wears off, you will wake up. Your anaesthesiologist will ensure your safety while transferring you from the procedure room to the recovery area.

Post-operative Management

Some medication would have been prescribed by the surgical team to reduce post-procedural pain, discomfort and nausea/vomitting. Occasionally, your anaesthesiologist may pay you a visit in the ward afterwards.
